Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries and is typically sought for aesthetic reasons or to restore breast volume after weight loss, pregnancy, or surgery.

Types of Breast Augmentation

  1. Breast Implants:

    • Saline Implants: Filled with sterile saltwater. If the implant ruptures, the body absorbs the saline naturally.
    • Silicone Implants: Filled with a silicone gel that feels more like natural breast tissue. Regular monitoring may be required to ensure implants remain intact.
    • Gummy Bear Implants: A type of silicone implant with a cohesive gel that retains shape even if ruptured.
  2. Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation:

    • Uses liposuction to remove fat from another area of the body (e.g., abdomen or thighs), which is then purified and injected into the breasts. This option is ideal for those seeking a modest size increase and a more natural result.

Procedure Overview

  1. Consultation:

    • Discuss goals, implant type, size, and placement options.
    • Pre-surgical planning with imaging or sizing tools.
  2. Anesthesia:

    • General anesthesia or intravenous sedation is typically used during the procedure.
  3. Incision Options:

    • Inframammary: In the crease under the breast.
    • Periareolar: Around the nipple's edge.
    • Transaxillary: In the armpit.
    • The choice depends on implant type, desired result, and surgeon recommendation.
  4. Implant Placement:

    • Submuscular: Beneath the chest muscle for a more natural contour.
    • Subglandular: Above the chest muscle for a quicker recovery and more defined projection.
  5. Closing and Recovery:

    • Incisions are closed with sutures, and a support bra is applied to aid healing.

Benefits

  • Enhances breast size and symmetry.
  • Improves body proportions and self-confidence.
  • Restores volume lost due to aging, pregnancy, or weight changes.

Recovery

  • Initial Phase: Swelling, bruising, and soreness for 1–2 weeks.
  • Supportive Garments: A surgical bra or compression garment is worn to minimize swelling and support healing.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for 4–6 weeks.
  • Final Results: Visible within 3–6 months after swelling subsides.

Risks

  • Capsular contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant).
  • Implant rupture or leakage.
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation.
  • Infection or poor healing of incisions.
  • Need for future surgeries due to implant aging or personal preference.

Ideal Candidates

  • Physically healthy and not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have fully developed breasts.
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome.
  • Looking to enhance breast size or restore volume and shape.
